This project asserts that multiracial identity, as a phenomenological condition, offers architecture a framework for recovering that capacity. To occupy an in-between state is to navigate spaces of belonging, refusing the default tactics of legibility, homogeneity, and resolution. Instead, it proposes an architectural practice grounded in heterogeneity: one that translates the interstitial, the blended, and the unresolved into spatial form.

This project uses bell hooks’ essay “An Aesthetic of Blackness—Strange and Oppositional” as a precedent for a journey of Black phenomenology and aesthetic exploration through space. As hooks argues, aesthetics is not organic but an intentional consideration of beauty's function in our spaces. “Black House and Universe” enters a site a family has stewarded for generations, specifically to explore self-expression, cultural preservation, and beauty.

The Library for Banned Books and the accompanying Center for Listening Ethics attempt to explore spatial design that evokes and encourages the practice of listening. Inspired by the Bureau of Listening's artistic explorations in Denmark and its narrative prompt for a “Center for Listening Ethics,” this design aims to create a space for “slow-thinking and caring,” encouraging the question: How can we listen?
OBJECT

This sculpture resulted from a semester-long search to answer the self-imposed question, “Can an identity be summarized into a single object?” This “stage for light” attempts to objectify phenomenological aspects of the Portuguese tradition, specifically by studying images of its coast and the tradition of fado music.

This project aimed to reorganize the original grid of an existing big-box retail store and create a new spatial order within and outside the initial grid. This adaptive "recycle" design was driven by parametric Voronoi diagrams—in two and three dimensions—which produced three unique objects highlighted to define the design's form. Extensions were made to fill programmatic needs.
